Finding the Durgin Covered Bridge
Leaving Tamworth in the rearview mirror
I was leaving Tamworth behind me as my photography window was winding down and soon I would have to head home. I now headed toward the Durgin Covered Bridge. It was sort of on my way home if I’m taking the Loooong way.
It can be tough to find this covered bridge. But I’m going to try to make this simple. When I was reading the New Hampshire Gazetteer (affiliate link), I have to admit it didn’t seem that way. I continued up Cleveland Road to Brown Hill Road to Durgin Road to Durgin Bridge Road, and at the bottom of the hill, is the Durgin Covered Bridge.
The bridge lies at the intersection of Durgin Bridge Road, Bridge View Road, River Road, Fellows Hill Road, and Foss Flats Road. If you find any of these roads you can follow them to the Durgin Covered Bridge.
You’re going to need to see the map below. Durgin Bridge is location “H” on the route.
Photographing the Durgin Covered Bridge
It’s the 14th of October 2015, and the insane thing is, it’s only 10:57 AM when I took the first shot looking down the hill at the covered bridge. (seen at right) The weather was partly sunny/overcast so I’m not seeing terribly contrasty images.
I worked my way around from the northern end to the southern end and since the side view was easy to get to, I went along the river’s edge and balanced on some rocks to get the wide-angle shot as you see it above.
The colors may have been peak on their way to past peak because the winds had been whipping through this valley and as the images show there are many piles of leaves on the roadside.
There are several spots on both sides of the bridge to park your car safely and, in general, I could hear when a car was coming down the dirt roads that lead to the bridge.
Lunchtime
I left the Durgin Covered Bridge on the southern side, making a right onto Fellows Hill Road. When you come to White Face Road, make a left (this is also 113A) and when you go by Route 113 on the left, be ready to pull over.
The North Sandwich Store will be on your right (slight pun as this is in North Sandwich… get it?) 🙂 You will have to travel into Sandwich as this general store is sadly no longer there as of October 2021.
I got a burger here, and they make a few different other things. I sat down at a big trestle table with several other folks (this was pre-Covid) as I waited for my burger. Nothing fancy here, just good food and good people.
Here is the map and today we’ll say goodbye till next week when this trip continues into Center Sandwich. Just the lettered section today in the western part of the map is today’s route.
