Emergo Farm, Vermont B&B
High on a hill like a beacon in the dark nights of rural Vermont is what Emergo Farm reminded me of. The stately white farmhouse sits on a hilltop with commanding views of the countryside.
Foliage friends of Jeffs have been lauding the praises of this B & B to jeff for years and I finally listened to the messages. These friends from Arizona (The Zonies, Tyler, and Kathy) stay there nearly every time they come to New England.
When we arrived at this working dairy farm, we were a bit early for check-in and no one was around (it is a working farm and there are chores to do, after all!), so we retraced our path back down to Danville for a little bite to eat.
Where to eat in Danville Vermont
We drove down to Route 2 and then explored a bit on the side roads. Danville is a small town and it doesn’t take long to go from town to forest.
We really weren’t sure where to eat lunch in Danville Vermont. Just off of the main street (Route 2), we found Bentley’s Bakery and Cafe which provided a little spot to sit and nourish ourselves after the long drive. It has an impressive, modern sandwich menu for such a small town. If you are just passing through, there are several tables and a restroom that make it great for a short stop on your travels.
Finding Dinner in Danville Vermont on a Monday
One problem we had was that on Monday nights, there are few options for dinners. There is a restaurant called Good Fella’s as you head out of town towards Saint Johnsbury. But they weren’t open on Monday nights so plan ahead. We drove by the Creamery Restaurant but they were also closed on Sundays’ and Mondays. Also, they are only open from 4-8 pm.
The next evening we decided to check out the Creamery Restaurant which had been closed the Monday evening before. The entrance is actually located down below on the lower level. Warm, cozy, and delicious food with an ever-changing menu. We returned to Emergo Farm with full bellies. We were quite pleased with the food and the ambiance of the place.
Nearby to Danville is Cabot Vermont
We were early in the area so we took a trip over to Cabot Vermont and went through downtown looking to see the Cabot fall festival. but people seemed to be in the exhibits and not on the street. We stopped at the Cabot Creamery before lunch and went through their shop to taste the many kinds of cheese. Read more about the Cabot creamery here.
Since we found ourselves in Cabot for lunch. Instead of just loading up on cheddar at Cabot Creamery, like we usually do, we wanted to look for a local diner in the downtown area so we could recommend an actual sit-down eatery for our readers. We noticed a small sign for Sarah’s Country Diner hanging from the building, which also housed Harry’s Hardware. (UPDATE: Sarah’s Diner is no longer, but there is still food served. It’s now called The Den.) How can you not go inside to see how this marriage of hardware and diner goes together?
Once inside, we found that it was more than just a marriage of those two, but more like a Menage et Trois. We were greeted with a wine bar on one side of the room, paint chips, and tools on the other. Way in the back, next to the nuts and bolts, was Sarah’s, Country Diner. Talk about diversification!
Sarah’s had good, homemade, comfort food and desserts, served with a smile, at a small counter and a couple of small tables. Highly recommended on a fall day!
What does the Emergo farm look like?
If you were wondering what the Emergo farm looks like you only need to walk around and explore. We were greeted by our gracious hostess, Lori, and shown our room in the rambling two-story farmhouse, and we began to get settled in. As with the Swiss Farm Inn in Pittsfield Vt, this is an authentically old farmhouse.
It is quiet, cozy, and comfortable, but you won’t find a television in your room, but there is wifi. Head on down to the small TV room on the first floor to get your movie fix and a hot beverage from the Keurig in the dining room.
Or maybe on a nice day, you’ll want to sit on the porch and rock, watching the cows graze in the field below. (as seen above)
What are the bedrooms like at the Emergo Farm?
The bedroom was spacious, clean, and pleasant! Comfy modern memory foam mattresses! As we were unpacking, we got a welcoming visit from the welcome wagon. Their son’s Black Lab came into great us. After a few ear scratches, he ambled on back out of the room.
As mentioned, Emergo Farm is a working dairy farm run by the fifth and sixth generation of Websters, and, if so inclined, you can go check out the cows, see how a farm is run, and maybe lend a hand. But I (Lisa) have had enough of that in my lifetime, so we scoped out the area a little. See below for links to articles on the routes we took.
Breakfast was in the formal dining room, and both days we stayed, the breakfast was quite good. The first day was scrambled eggs, with thick-cut toast and beautifully poached pears which I still can’t get out of my head! But Jeff doesn’t like pears, so he wasn’t so crazy about it.
The second morning, we were presented with a simple but plentiful breakfast of waffles, a choice of bacon, or sausage with maple syrup.
So on a dreary Wednesday, we checked out of Emergo, and in town, we noticed the Farmer’s Market set up in the square so we picked up some baked goods for our trip home and small handcrafted items for Christmas.
On the road, we noticed a farm stand, and driving by we read Maple Creemees! Jeff saw that and whipped that car around and we have to say, at Butch’s Harvest’ore at Dow’s Crossing Farm, that Maple Creemees are great for brunch. We also took home some maple syrup and looked over some fresh vegetables.
