What To Do if You Can’t Make it to New England?
Fall Foliage season is nearly upon us as I write, and you would so want to be here for the show, but it is not in the plans. You can peruse my articles here on my blog because every single article has some nice photos I’ve taken, but maybe you want to feel like you’re right here with me. Then these are my suggestions.
Oh! And you can do them year-round as well!
Exploring from your living room
If you don’t think you’ll be able to travel this way in October then how about a staycation?.
Of course, you can vicariously enjoy New England via my webcams that I have found around New England. I have found some in nearly every state but I need to find some in Rhode Island and Connecticut because for some reason they just don’t seem to put good or interesting webcams up that I can share. 🙁
I can think of things to do from my living room like visiting the Vermont Country Store website where you can order a little piece of Vermont goodness. We seem to be doing a lot of that these days. Ordering in some Vermont-made specialty cheeses could be nice. Remember though the Vermont Country Stores are Destinations in and of themselves.
Now, I want to remind you about all the little Mom and Pop stores and family-run farms. They live or die by tourism as much as the B&Bs/Inns/Breakfast joints do.
Why don’t you take a little of the money that you would have spent on your vacation and go online and buy some VT/NH/ME/MA/CT/RI-made maple syrup or other products? (Yes, here is a list, but I bet you can find plenty more places to help out.)
- Vermont Maple producers
- New Hampshire Maple Producers
- Maine Maple Producers
- Massachusetts Maple Producers
- Connecticut Maple Producers
- Rhode Island Maple Producers
If we all help out during these tough times then we will all benefit from the generosity of others and hopefully, turn around and enable others to deal with the day-to-day stress of these stressful times we live in.
The Upside of Virtual New England Travel
Finally, the real upside of this form of New England travel is that you can do it at any time! You will have a stress-free time gazing at fall colors through the webcams, eating pancakes with New England-made natural maple syrup, and eating maple cotton candy. Watch movies made in or set in New England like Good Will Hunting out of Boston or How about Beetlejuice which is set in Connecticut but was filmed in East Corinth Vermont (one building is still there and a sign for the covered bridge), and of course Hocus Pocus, Set in Salem and filmed in Salem and Marblehead Massachusetts.
I hope this helps ease the pain a little of not being here. I will of course travel the countryside, looking for the elusive fall colors and letting you know here what I have found…

Thanks Dr. Ron!
Thanks for getting me to think about fall foliage…Good to have something pleasant to think about.
Your picture of The Vermont Country Store is one of my favorites..My wife has taken that picture every year that we have been “Leaf Peeping” Each year the setting is a little different but always beautiful!
Again Thanks,
Hoss
Its a lot more pleasant than the rest of what is going on. I will keep reminding people about the more pleasant aspects of travel that we tend to forget at these stressful times.
Stay healthy and safe to you and everybody!
Jeff, I was going to buy a NH/VT Gazetteer but someone had commented that the newer ones didn’t show certain areas.
Buyer wrote, “Earlier editions would show unimproved (dirt) roads, abandoned building foundation holes, vernal ponds and differing areas of vegatation. This edition omits several unimproved roads still in common use where I live. It’s useful for showing state campgrounds, recreation areas and boat launch ramps. Keep a magnifying glass handy, some print is tiny!”
Would I benefit buying an older version, if one is available?
Thanks
Mary
Hi Mary, I have several variations of gazetteers. One of the NH/VT but another 3 Vermont books, 2 NH and one of the rest. Lisa has noted the new ones no longer have the lists of covered bridges so they do change them and there are reasons to keep them
