Many of you have already visited one of the two Vermont Country Stores. One is in Weston Vermont and the other sits in Rockingham Vermont. Normally, the “General Stores” that we visit are as different as the people that own them. But with the Vermont Country stores, the theme is very similar for both of the stores but the layout is slightly different.

This is more accurately called a “Destination Store” rather than a General Store. The Vermont Country Store has been around since 1946 (74 years in 2020) and even has a catalog with online shopping for those who want to buy Vermont-made products and can’t get there.

There are two stores, one in Weston Vermont and the other in Rockingham Vermont. Both are great destinations to plan a stop at in your fall foliage journey. They are both red buildings, and they both have a Mildred’s Restaurant next door but there are a couple of differences.

As you can see here they both are similar in color and layout. But if you are observant, you will see in the picture below, the Bellows Falls store has a covered bridge and grist mill…

A few of the nice things about the stores (too many to list them all so if I miss your fav, leave a comment below). I love the cheese specialty shop with many Vermont brands, they have many “Made in Vermont” products and “Made in the USA” products as well.

Also, I just realized that I forgot to mention it!!! They have Maple Creemees and Maple Milkshakes… Yum! (creemees=soft serve)

One thing I noticed is that the Rockingham Vermont Country Store has its own covered bridge as well as the Worrall and Bartonsville covered bridges are just under 3 miles North on Route 103 in Southern Vermont (take Route 106 out of Woodstock Vermont to Springfield Vt, then Route 11 to Chester VT and take 103 south. You will hit the covered bridges first on Lower Bartonsville Rd, and then Williams Rd, and then just over 2 miles further to the Vermont Country Store. The bridge beside the Vermont Country Store has the sweet name of The Kissing Bridge. The Vermont Country Store’s website says it’s “an old tradition from the horse-and-buggy days when a boy would stop halfway across a covered bridge where it was quiet to give his girl a kiss. Old-timers used to call all covered bridges “kissing bridges” and somehow the name stuck to ours.”

The Vermont Country Store in Weston is in the center of the town of Weston Vermont. The reason most people find this store is that is sits on Route 100. So let’s just say it’s easy to find. See more General Stores on our General Store page. Here is a link to the Vermont Country Store website.
