Trap Falls in Ashby Massachusetts
This is one of those easy to get to, but out-of-the-way places, that are great side stops on our journeys. This one is just off Route 119 in North/Central Massachusetts. You’ll find it just North of Fitchburg MA. Lisa and I love the little back roads between the rather sizable towns of Lowell, Fitchburg, Worchester, Gardner, and the New Hampshire border.
There are not a lot of routes between these towns and the New Hampshire border but just enough back roads with little surprises to explore. There are little State Parks and towns that are quite quaint to while away your afternoon.
Today we’ll talk a bit about Trap Falls which is in the Willard Brook State Forest. There is parking for several cars. After leaving the car, it’s a short walk along the brook. You will see off to the right a formal (maintained) bathroom (men or women). There are several picnic tables at intervals with standing-style grills.
Down towards the waterfall, you will find a bridge so you can easily cross over and view the waterfall from different vantage points. The “trail” is very easy and the area is level for walking.
Trap Brook flows over the rocks and breaks into three separate plunges that fall 10-12 feet into a pool and then down the stream. In fall, the water flow is less impressive but if you catch it the day after it has rained, it will be more so.
The afternoon light falls on the three separate streams that plunge down into the bowl-shaped pool below. I find that there is a lot of tree cover around the falls which filters the direct sunlight. As I said before the waterfall is much better if it has rained recently. Just a short distance down Route 119, you will find, Damon Pond on Hosmer Road. Also, there are many more areas to explore if you have time. Below you will find a map of the location.
