Stephen Kings Home in Bangor Maine
This past autumn, Lisa and I spent time in Maine. In fact, we spent more time in Maine than any other year in quite a long time. Lisa researches (when she’s not making art) by reading blogs, articles, and social media posts to look for new places that she and I will enjoy visiting. One of the things she found for us to locate was Stephen King’s previous home in Bangor Maine.
(Links here are affiliate links) I will have to admit that I have not read all of his books. In fact, I think I’ve read only about four, Pet Sematary, Dead Zone, IT, and Needful Things. That’s all for reading, and I’m not sure if the limited number of reads was anything more than he scared the crap out of me. 🙂 Oh, give me a break, admit it, he scares you as well…
I’ve watched many more on TV like Salem’s Lot, The Shining, Carrie, and some I didn’t know he wrote like The Running Man, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and Under the Dome. I’ve seen more on TV than I’ve actually picked up and read. How many of his have you watched Vs. read?
Arriving in Bangor Maine
We had driven all the way up to Houlton Maine to get the covered bridge that was the furthest away in Maine. (read about my 9 covered bridges in Maine) As we were coming back, Lisa said we were stopping in Bangor, and we’d be seeing the house of Stephen King!
Before you get all excited, this is where he and his wife “used” to live. I have heard of another home in Maine (I believe this is the one that has all the bats on the fence), and also a home down in Florida. (let’s face it, how many of us would NOT want to escape the New England winters by wintering in Florida?)
The iron fence keeps us at a respectful distance from the home, and there are two dragons on either side of the gated entrance.
Many of the Victorian homes along Broadway where you will find this red-painted mansion could have fallen out of a movie set, and I would love to see what Halloween is like on this street. Mr. King took his inspiration from growing up in Maine, first in Portland, and then bringing a certain notoriety to Bangor.
A distinctive giveaway that you found the right place
It’s not readily apparent from all angles but as you look over the iron fence or past the iron cobwebs until you see a dead tree in the yard. This in and of itself is not that unusual in anyone’s yard, but this rather whimsical sight is a clear indicator of the owner.
Woodcutter and sculptor, Josh Landry (click the link to Josh’s website) designed and cut the work of art tree at the Stephen King house in Bangor Maine. Most of the animals make sense for his stories but there is a dragon in there and I don’t remember a dragon in any of Stephen King’s tales.
The work that was carved here is as thought-provoking as the author, and a lot of fun to look at from the iron fence perimeter.
I’m not doing turn-by-turn directions, just use your GPS, here is a Google map to the location. If you are interested in Stephen King’s upcoming works, click this link to his website.

Lovely place, and photos of it. I have never been to Maine. Would love to one day.
I think it is worth exploring, but big.. really big…
My friends and I were there September 28 2022. Your photo is outstanding. Jeff, Stephen King wrote “The Eyes of the Dragon.” I hope that answers your dragon dilemma, lol.
solved the problem, but he has so many stories, it’s hard to know them all.
