A View from Quill Hill in Maine
Last summer the daughter of the gentleman who created Quill Hill contacted me and told me about this hill in Maine with a wonderful view. I looked it up and was intrigued. It has its own Facebook page and Lisa and I thought it looked promising. We stopped in during our September 2021 trip to Stratford and the Flagstaff Lake area of western Maine.
Locating Quill Hill
It’s located about 7.5 miles north outside the town of Rangeley Maine off Route 16. BUT! Our first time there we didn’t have it located on the map and went from memory (first mistake). We drove for a bit after leaving Rangeley and felt that we might have missed it, so we turned onto Reddington Road (NOT the right road).
We drove through a lot of nothing, not finding it. Let’s just say, even though Google Maps says it goes to Quill Hill, it’s a “you can’t get there from here” scenario.
We retraced our route coming back out on Route 16 and drove a bit further north and spotted a sign for Quill Hill at Oddy’s Road and turned in. As I remember it, there is a sign to greet you.
The drive up is not a smooth one with loose gravel and potholes, but all cars should have no problems making this climb. This video is an example of how bumpy it can be…
I think you’d agree that the views at the top go on forever…
360 degrees of views from Quill Hill
Once you arrive out on top there is a fair amount of parking. There is a raised platform with picnic tables but the picnic table seen below is actually found below the peak at the next level down.
There is a wheelchair-accessible path around the top and down to the lower level. It’s flat and pretty level at the top but has a gravel/dirt base. On the lower level, there is a wood-burning oven that can be used for cooking and a picnic area available. They DO ask for a donation if you use it.
Is Quill Hill Free?
Quill Hill is free to enter, but they ask for a $5 donation per vehicle/person. There is a metal box set into the rocks that you will pass on the way out. If you visit, please be generous since this is private property. The family maintains the roads and the viewing platforms with your donations.
On a clear day like this, you should see views of the Bigelow Range, Sugarloaf Mountain, Snow Mountain, and other lower peaks and on into Canada.
When we returned home, Lisa and I did an interview with NPR and Lisa stated that her new favorite place is Quill Hill, Maine.

You chose a gorgeous time of year to visit there, considering the colors on the mountains. Thank you for including details such as about the condition of the road. Considering that I’m always traveling alone, I avoid that sort of road for fear of being caught somewhere with vehicle or tire damage. Still, I love reading your reports of the places and, of course, seeing your pictures.

Thanks Jeff..Great pictures of Quill Hill.. We experienced a very similar situation in trying to find the road to Quill Hill .Fortunately a man in a pickup saw us pulled over and looking lost .He actually stopped and gave us directions to the road…We agree with Lisa ,it is our favorite fall foliage stop in Maine.. The 360 degree view on top . is fantastic.
Again Thanks for sharing,
Hoss
