Explore the Alfred Maine Country Store and…
Today we’re looking at Alfred Maine. If you are looking for the fall colors then you will arrive later in October as seen by my pictures below but it can be a fun visit at any time.
The Alfred Country Store was our first stop this day. As you can see it has a single table outside to take your lunch outside on a sunny day. If it’s cool and overcast like this day then this is not going to be comfortable. So lack of seating is the main reason for a rating of 4 stars. Everything inside is well worth the stop.
The inside of the store is homey and a great place to stop and get a sandwich or baked item, or maybe a giant flamingo!
It isn’t a real rustic general store and is more of a hybrid mixing in all the useful things that you might want to stop and pick up during a summer vacation along with some of the features of a general store. So if you need a refill on coffee or a large chocolate chip cookie, they have you covered. They have a deli counter at the back to get a sandwich for the road which will satisfy almost everyone.
There is a single bathroom that will take care of your needs in that area, but there is just a single, so you could have to get in line. This is a nice place to stop because they also have locally made items along one wall, so your stop could be longer while you peruse the store. The place was clean and the person behind the counter was friendly.
Exploring Alfred Maine for the fall colors
We’ve passed this way a few times over the years and in September we were too far south for meaningful fall colors, but in a previous visit we got there in the late afternoon on 14 October 2013 and the Alfred Parrish Church across the road was an eye-catcher.
The Parrish church has a small cemetery that had headstones dating back to the 1700s. In the late afternoon in mid-October, you can get the rustic stones and iron gates that surround the cemetery with the ancient maples lending their autumn colors to the scene. Here is what the town center looks like from above.
So as always this can make a good plan “B” to explore the town, grab a coffee and a chocolate chip cookie, or a grinder (hoagie for out-of-towners) and visit the town and see what you can discover about Alfred Maine yourself…
