27 October 2023, Fall Foliage Report
Greetings leaf peepers far and wide!
It’s that time of year when many of you have gone back home, and you might be feeling that sinking feeling in your stomach that comes when something is coming to an end once again. I notice the trees in my webcams every day, and they seem to be shedding their leaves more and more. It’s inevitable that the fall foliage season is coming to a close.
Every year I have to deal with the (usually) slow death of the fall colors as it slowly passes from the north to the south until finally, only the coastal areas have any color left. With this in mind here is an article I wrote about Fall Foliage Denial and if you are wondering what the 6 steps of fall foliage are? Here is another article on that process.
You may be thinking this is it and it’s all over! Well while the fall colors have been absent in their usual outstanding display, they have been found here or there if you were persistent. I took the above image two days ago and this lovely bull was found near Spencer Massachusetts last night on a farm we passed by.
So while the big landscapes of the hillsides covered in the fall colors are few and far between you can still make a perfect picture if you keep looking. My photographer friends are also still trying, as you can see below.
What has been seen in the past few days…
New Hampshire
In New Hampshire, Photographer Chris Whiton of White Mountain Images is still finding lovely compositions and as he puts it, the “Snowliage” is more snow than “liage”, but it is still pretty.
Vermont
Maine
As you can see in my webcams below, the prognosis is not good for this weekend…
BUT!!! Getting out and driving the coastal route to view Halloween displays and lighthouses and maybe catching a farmstand can be a great drive on Saturday. Here is a link to my Maine images and in this gallery of beautiful images you get free shipping in North America, and for another week there is a sale using the code Autumn2023, don’t miss out!
Massachusetts
I’m not the only one on the road this week. Photographer Joann Vitali hit places like French Kings Bridge, Turner’s Falls, Poet’s Seat Tower, Shelburne Falls, and Townsend, MA.
And in Salem Massachusetts…
Rhode Island
Photographer Mark Spremulli was out yesterday along Route 77 North in Tiverton Rhode Island
Jeff’s Take on this Weekend, 27 October – 1 November
OK, I have a feeling… Don’t hold me to it but I think there is going to be more color developing in Massachusetts and points south this weekend and through next week. The temps are dropping on Sunday (with wind and rain) and that is a double-edged sword. We saw a lot of the hills in Central Mass along I-90 on Thursday and there are a lot of oaks to turn and a lot of other trees that have YET to turn, so there could be a week or two more of the fall colors.
One thing I want to say and I can’t emphasize this enough. We traveled in the past week on routes that were not highways but they are the main roads for travel. Route 62, Route 20, Route 9, and of Course we did hit a few highways like I-95/I-90. We found the best things when got off these main roads and onto the smaller back roads. That was when we found the bull on the hill in Spencer on Howe Road or Howe State Park in Massachusetts.
We obviously got to Howe State Park a week or two too late but there was still fall color to be seen and as the sun was setting the warm afternoon light did wonders for the landscape. If you get out on the smaller back roads and look for little towns. If you don’t do this you will miss roads called Podunk Rd… Did I find anything there? Maybe, but you need to go explore those back roads to see what you will find.
The big question is this… Will there be another report? Maybe but I’m back to work (M-F) so we will have to see what I can come up with next weekend. We will have to wait and see what Mother Nature drops on us during this coming week…
Safe travels my friends, be safe, and most importantly, do something nice for someone else today and tomorrow

Thank you for sharing again this season, Jeff. I wasn’t able to visit the leaves this year but I enjoyed living vicariously through you.
Well, here is to the future… it’s the denial phase of the fall colors for this area but there is a little color out there
Thank you for another years’ wonderful advice delivered with humor and wit. As always, I’ll look forward to hearing from you as next summer turns to fall!
Well I will be here, now if Mother Nature will play nice, next year will be so much better
Beautiful and main travel roads and photos of them!!
Thank you!
Thanks for the reports make not every get to see foliage in New england but like the reports and pictures.I’m fortunate enough to live close to the smoky mountains.we had a good year here.
I’ve never been to the Smokey’s but maybe someday, who knows… I’m always so wrapped up in New England that I never even look at the rest of the picture
Jeff, I’ve been touring New England for foliage for the last several years to escape the heat in Texas. Peak foliage has been recently the third week of October in VT, NH, and ME. I’m planning to head to a more southern part of New England in 2024 – Salem, Quincy, Plymouth, and Cape Cod. When was the peak foliage weeks for those areas in the last 5 years? Should I go the week of Halloween or early November based on your recent records?
The week before to after the 31st are usually the best for these areas. Part of the answer is predicated on storms that we do or don’t receive during this October… IF the storms hold off AND the leaves are happy and stay on the trees then it will be great… Otherwise…. 🙂
