As the Foliage Turns – Episode 11: Chasing Color, Cold Nights, and Columbus Day Weekend — 11 Comments

  1. Jeff,

I drove Rt 2 in Maine and New Hampshire yesterday (9 OCT) from Newport, ME and Gorham, NH. In Maine between Newport and Rumford Falls there were really very nice colors with the best being right around Skowhegan, ME. along the Kennebec river. After Rumford you really need to search for anything other than muted colors.

  2. Jeff, I just discovered your great posts. I will be doing a day trip out of Portland on 10/14. I believe Kancamagus had already past peak. Can I get recommendations where else I can consider and still see strong colors? At this point, I’m thinking Hacker’s Hill Preserve, Lake Sebago, Bridgton, Conway, Cathedral Ledge and route 302 around White Mt. Open to other recommendations and worthy stops along this route. Appreciate your help in advance.

    • There is a storm moving on shore today, and I think you may have to wait until it passes before I know what is what. The leaves across ME/NH/VT are all not needing a reason to drop leaves, and this could mean you go looking for covered bridges and other things that don’t require “strong color”. Massachusetts could hold onto color due to less drought, but they are closer to the storm… The devil is in the details… Sorry… I hope to go back out on Wednesday after the storm moves on…

  3. Hi Jeff, just found your post! I’m from Florida and this is a first for us. We’ve been in Acadia/Bar Harbor area since the 10th. Did Cadillac Mtn summit drive, drove around Clifton, ME today and back to Bar Harbor. It’s all beautiful but not the abundance of colors I expected. We have to make it to New Haven, CT by Saturday the 18th. Trying to decide where to go next to view the most color possible before we head back south. If you have a moment, let us know where you would go between the 13th and the 18th from bar harbor. We would appreciate it very much! Your pictures are amazing and your suggestions seem the most reliable since you’re actually on the ground reporting! Being a first-timer, it took me a few tries to get to your post! Wish I had found you a few days earlier!

  4. Hi Jeff. We are looking to take our annual Fall trip later than usual this year, beginning on Oct. 21. Where can we still see the best Fall foliage that week.
