Kettle Pond Scenic View from Owls Head Mountain
There is a scenic overlook of Kettle Pond from Owls Head Mountain. If you’re in the Peacham area, this is a great place to visit. It’s a short drive up Route 242 to the entrance of the upper parking lot. To reach the viewpoint, you’ll need to hike along an easy-to-moderate trail. Enjoy the beautiful scenery.
The first thing is to get there, and this one is pretty easy. You take Route 232 either from the south and Route 302 or from the North and Route 2. Either way will get you there, and then you look for the Lanesboro Road.
Getting to Groton State Forest
This narrow dirt road will take you up to a dirt parking lot where you will jump from your vehicle (or, if you are like me, get out slowly and stretch before moving) and then hike up the last section to the Owls Head lookout. It’s a fairly easy hike by my standards, but if you have mobility issues, you are in luck. There is a trail just off the parking lot that takes you along a dirt path to a pavilion and a lower but easier-to-access view of Kettle Pond.
This path is, from what I could see, wheelchair-accessible. I think they have weddings and the like in this spot, so it has to be easier to get to.
Now, for those of you who rise early to get dawn shots or are late owls, the views are great from the observation point on top, BUT! Be very careful, as the Park Rangers will lock the gate at the bottom and go home for the night. If you are planning on being there after dark, plan to leave your car on the roadside and hike it up. Now I consider THAT to be a real hike. It’s a steep grade!

Wonderful place. Want to re visit. It wasn’t a steep incline to reach the top and the view was amazing. Good to relive it through your photos.
