30 August, 2023 Foliage Report — 16 Comments

  1. We will be arriving in Vermont (from CA) on 10/8. Fingers crossed we aren’t too early for the foliage. Thoughts?

  2. Hi Jeff! Thank you for another great update! We’ve read that this year the color is forecasted to be muted. How bad do you think it will be? Comparing to past few years? We went to VT and NH in 2012 and left disappointed. This year is our second try, and hope for a better year than 2012.
We plan to hit Stowe and white mountains in either 10/1-6 or 10/7-12, which set of dates do you think give us the better chance?

  3. We currently had plans scheduled for Stowe, VT for Sept 26-29th (and then on to Acadia before heading towards Boston) should we change it to be in Stowe Oct 9th-11th?

    • these are better dates based on history but the problem is that with the right combo of temps and sunshine, your early dates could be good for Stowe. I just don’t know what rest of the month will do for amounts of daytime sunshine and nighttime temps… Sorry I can’t be more reassuring but this is an art and not a science that is predicted. You will have to make a decision go go with it and enjoy…

  4. Thanks, Jeff. I have read all of your reports. I am still excited about this foliage season. I will be there the first of October. I have ALWAYS been more than pleased with each foliage season. My favorite vacation of all places I have been. Thanks so much.

  5. Jeff,
Do you think the second week in October will be peak for Southeast NH, SWMaine like Arcadia and NE Mass for Topsfield fair?

  6. Hi, we are planning to drive via White Mountains (Kanc highway & Mt. Washington) on 13th October to Acadia, where we are planning to spend both 14th and 15th of October and then hit Camden on the 16th.

Do you think this is a good plan? Or would you like to provide some alternate suggestions?

  7. Always excellent easy to read reporting. I am eager as well but I do believe colors will be a challenge in certain areas and hope that the Cloudland closure is a warning to others to be respectful when out photographing .
    Safe travels!

  8. Jeff,

I’ve been following your reports this year because I want to visit northern Vermont this year to capture photos of the fall foliage. I am planning to be up there from October 14th to 18th. I picked this weekend because a read multiple articles saying it would come late this year. Is this going to be too late or will I be able to find spots of the area looking “peak”?

    • I HOPE you will be late for Northern Vermont. This year I expect to see a patchwork quilt of fall colors starting late in September. IF… IF we see lowering temps starting this coming weekend AND it continues (not the rain that is scheduled but the temps continue to lower) Then I think by the last week of Sept we should be seeing some good color on the Canadian border progressing into the NEK.
The first week of October should be even better. NOW… Jim Salge at Yankee says it will be early and long lasting… 🙂 If this happens then your dates could still work but you may also be running into snow arriving in higher elevations.
You will also be able to head a bit further south to Stowe or Woodstock and if, IF, it’s past peak up north then heading south is your best bet.

  9. Hi Jeff,
Thank you so much for the time you take to provide the public with your knowledge! I have been scouring your blog for a while now, and it has been so helpful.

I am making a last minute trip to the NE, flying into Boston. I am open to going anywhere in Vermont, NH, and/or Maine between the dates of October 11-16. It’ll be my first time so I’m eager for a variety of locations/views, but I’m especially drawn to views from higher up. I was thinking of Mt. Washington/White Mountains, but I’m a bit worried I’ll be too late. What do you think? Any general areas you’d recommend in particular instead?

Thanks so much for your time and generosity!
