Autumn Bliss in Burke, Vermont: A Guide to Nature’s Colorful Canvas
Exploring Burke, Vermont in autumn offers a captivating experience for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and anyone craving the quintessential New England fall getaway. I’m not a mountain biker or hiker so take these recommendations as coming from someone who looks at these things as something I would do in my younger days. My biking was limited to long rides on the pavement. But Lisa and I are not opposed to long walks on trails (It depends on what is found at the end).
I first found Burke Vermont (by accident) after I had found the Guildhall Grist Mill/Crawford farm in Guildhall Vermont. After exploring the Grist Mill I decided to see where the farm road went that stretched off to the west. This road is the Granby Road and after a while it turns into the Victory Road (as you pass through Victory Vermont) it’s a decent drive it will bring you out to East Burke Vermont.
Why are we heading to Burke Vermont in the First Place?
Fall Foliage: (DUH!!!) Burke is renowned for its breathtaking fall foliage, with a kaleidoscope of colors blanketing the landscape. Whether you come into Burke from the Granby/Victory Road (mentioned above), South out of Willoughby, or north out of Lyndon Vermont. You have many roads to explore. Believe it or not, I have not hit all the different roads, in and around Burke.

Routes 114 and 5 give you general boundaries between East and West Burke with Burke and Burke Hollow between them. There are north/south running ridgelines above Routes 5 and 114. These routes are in valleys that will let you catch walls or hills as the background. (photo tip) Framing a barn or subject against a hillside of fall colors is always good.
Scenic Outdoor Photography Options: Below you will see a few of the photo opportunities in Burke during the autumn, from panoramic vistas to close-up shots of colorful foliage and quaint rural scenes. The scenic drives listed below will give you a “starting Point” for capturing the beauty of the season.
Scenic Drives: Here are 4 scenic drives where you can start in Lyndon or Burke and explore the area thoroughly.
- Route 5/5A to Lake Willoughby: Take Route 5 north from Lyndon (5 covered bridges) towards the charming town of West Burke. As you drive, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of rolling hillsides adorned with brilliant red, orange, and gold hues. At West Burke turn onto Route 5A as it winds its way through the scenic Willoughby State Forest, eventually reaching Lake Willoughby. The road hugs the Eastern shore of this breathtaking glacial lake, offering unparalleled views of the surrounding mountains ablaze with fall colors. Be sure to stop at one of the pull-offs or scenic overlooks to capture the beauty of the landscape.
- Route 114 to Island Pond (and beyond): Head north from Lyndon on Route 114 towards the town of East Burke, then to Island Pond. This picturesque route follows the valley between two ranges of medium-sized hills, Burke Mountain will pass to your right as you head north. The road meanders through a landscape dotted with picturesque farms, historic barns, and quaint villages, all set against a backdrop of vibrant fall foliage. Take your time to soak in the scenery and perhaps stop at one of the lakes along the way. Depending on your dates, you will be dazzled by the reflections in Island Pond, or Norton Pond. You can go all the way up to the Canadian border and follow 114 east towards Caanan and loop back south again.
- (Here is a secret gem) Leaving Lyndon VT on 114 takes you past Darling Hill Road. This road straddles the ridgeline between Routes 5 and 114. You can take this up past the Wildflower Inn which is next to Kingdom Trails bike rentals. This is also where you will find Heaven’s Bench. There is no dedicated parking to get out and see Heaven’s Bench so get permission from either of the two establishments. Better yet, make reservations at the Wildflower Inn and walk up the hill leisurely.
The road continues past this point past several scenic farms with classic barns until you arrive at Burke and then Burke Hollow. Once in Burke Hollow, you are at the 5-way intersection with names to choose from like Burke Hollow Rd (expected), Bugbe Crossing (fun sounding), Brook Rd (possibilities), and my favorite, Sugarhouse Road. (winner) This road is mostly a dirt road and yes it does take you to a sugarhouse - Route 5 to Derby Line: Drive north on Route 5 from Burke towards the town of Derby Line, near (let me make this clear the town is *ON* the Canadian border). This scenic route takes you through the scenic countryside of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, with rolling hillsides blanketed in a patchwork of autumn colors. As you approach Derby Line, you’ll pass through charming villages and pastures dotted with grazing cows. Consider taking a slight detour to visit the Haskell Free Library and Opera House, which straddles the border between the United States and Canada, offering a unique cultural experience. Have your passport with you because if you make the wrong turn the border guards will have questions for you.
But is this all that Burke offers? Mixed in with the vibrant hues of red, orange, and gold that adorn the trees are a multitude of outdoor activities.
