The 6 Most Popular Fall Foliage Locations in New England
New England is known for its breathtaking fall foliage, with leaves turning vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow as the weather cools down. If you’re looking to experience the best of New England’s fall foliage, here are 6 locations you can start your foliage search from. I could probably make this the top 54 places and I would still feel I left out many New England scenic spots. So I have created a general list of “our” favorite zones to start at and then tried to choose a few unique nearby locations for you to visit.

1. Stowe Vermont
Stowe, Vermont:
Stowe is a very popular destination for fall foliage in New England. Vermont has a great variety of trees, including maples, birches, and oaks, which display a stunning array of colors during the fall season.
This makes the environs around Stowe one of the best places to view the Vermont fall colors. Some of the highlights to check out around Stowe include, the Stowe Recreation Path, Trapp Family Lodge, and (of course) Mount Mansfield & (Smuggler’s Notch).
2. White Mountains, New Hampshire
White Mountains, New Hampshire:
The White Mountains are home to some of the most breathtaking fall foliage in all of New England. The region is home to a wide variety of deciduous trees, including maples, Elm, and Hickory, which display a stunning array of colors during the fall season. Some of the best places to view the fall foliage in the White Mountains include Franconia Notch State Park, Crawford Notch State Park, and the trails and scenic overlooks along the Kancamagus Highway.
3. The Connecticut River Valley
The Connecticut River Valley:
Stretching from the Candian Border down through Vermont and New Hampshire into Massachusetts and Connecticut. The Connecticut River Valley is home to some of the most beautiful fall foliage in New England. Its towns delight visitors with their Colonial-era homes, walkable village centers, historic inns, and many cultural attractions.
Here is a short list of spots to check out. There are two covered bridges over the river and many more near the Connecticut River. You have The Fort at Four on the NH side and in Massachusetts, there are things like: The French Kings Bridge, Poets Seat Tower, and Old Historic Deerfield Village. (Note this is not even 1% of all the things to see along the Connecticut River!)

4. Berkshires, Massachusetts

The Berkshires is a beautiful region located in western Massachusetts that is known for its stunning fall foliage. The largest towns associated with the Berkshires region include Pittsfield, North Adams, Great Barrington, Williamstown, Stockbridge, Lee, and Lenox, Massachusetts. The region is home to a variety of landscape features, Mount Greylock, Monument Mountain. and roads passing through ravines with trees in red, gold, and orange climbing the sides. Museums like the Norman Rockwell Museum and the Trustees of Reservations Naumkeag Museum.
Some of the best places to view the fall foliage in the Berkshires include Olivia’s Overlook, and the Route 2 Mohawk Trail overlook.
5. Litchfield Hills, Connecticut
Litchfield Hills, Connecticut:
The Litchfield Hills is a picturesque region located in western Connecticut that is known for its stunning fall foliage. The region is home to a variety of trees, which display a stunning array of colors during the fall season. Some of the best places to view the fall foliage in the Litchfield Hills include White Memorial Conservation Center, the Litchfield Hills Greenway, and the town, Yankee Magazine rates as the best foliage town, Kent Connecticut.
6. The Maine Coast
The Maine Coast:
The Maine Coast is a popular destination for fall foliage, as the trees in the region turn a stunning shade of red and orange. The area is known for its rocky coastline, charming towns, and delicious seafood. To the North, you have Mount Katahdin which is a new National Park. South West of there is Rangeley Lake which is a perfect escape for the outdoorsy types.
You can head over to the coast and explore Acadia National Park. It is always popular year-round, and the fall colors in this area turn later since it is located along the coast of Maine. Some of the best places to view the fall foliage on the Maine coast are, Acadia National Park, the view of Camden from Mount Battie, and Maybe out to Harpswell on one of those fingers of land sticking out into the Atlantic ocean.
