What’s not to love about old inns?

I’ve stayed here two times and one note you need to know is that are no motels or “cheap” lodging in Sugar Hill. This was the playground of the rich and famous in the 1800s and into the early 1950s. Today there are several beautiful B&Bs and Inns in Sugar Hill, and you can find them by hitting my lodging page (put in your location and it will give you a list).

I stayed there the first time because I had run out of daylight and decided not to drive back home. They gave me a good rate, I think because I was coming in late and they had vacancy. (This was 2016) Their kitchen was closed, but they made me a salad and sandwich which was awesome since there was nothing nearby to get a meal that I felt like driving to.

The nearest places for meals are Polly’s and/or driving back down to Route 18 where there are sandwich places/eateries. There is also Woodstock NH and Lincoln (about 20-25 min drive)

But! Check at the desk to see what new places are around. Sunset Hill House serves a full breakfast, and I’d say the food is well worth it, but they served to us little store bought muffins where we expected something homemade.

The next morning I woke early to find the clouds or fog rolling over the tops on the nearby hills and into the valley below. The sight was simply breathtaking.

Lisa and I have stayed there and we find it a little pricey, but it is a lovely place and they take good care of you. And you can wake up to views like this!

Further down the road, you can make a right onto Sunset Hill Road. Along here you have the Sugar Hill Sampler (the Sampler is now closed), The Sampler is a gift shop and museum where you can taste some of their maple goodies and read newspaper clippings and see old movie posters. The movie posters may include some of Betty Davis’s and this is notable since she loved to come here to relax in the ’30s. Betty Davis even owned a home up here called Butternut Farm. Polly’s Pancake Parlor

Instead of a long write-up on Polly’s when I’ve done several, here is a link to an article all about Polly’s Pancake Parlor. Polly’s is still one of the best places to go to get breakfast or lunch. Savory or sweet, it’s not to be missed and needs to be visited, at least once.

Last year Lisa and I were coming up from Route 18 to 117 and on the way to Polly’s, we passed a nice morning scene at a farm down the road.

There is no room to park on Route 117, so I drove up to a dirt road further up, parked, and walked back. There was a nice hill in the background so if you get there in mid-October, it could be fully in color.
