If you come to New Hampshire in the fall around mid-October and the leaves have started to fade up in the White Mountains, the Lake Region is a very good place to migrate to, as the “lake effect” causes the trees to turn a later in mid-October.

 Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in New Hampshire. It may be hard to spell, but it’s easy on the eyes.  You will find many touristy towns around Lake Winnipesaukee and one that we have frequented is the quaint little town of Meredith. This special little town has a sunny disposition and it is very busy with its summer vacationers lining up at the docks with their boats.

Lisa’s Take

We were fortunate enough to stay at the most beautiful of accommodations at Church Landing at Mill Falls, several years ago.  I believe it was in the Birch Lodge portion of Church Landing (Room name has changed).

There are many places to stay in Meredith at different price points and Mill Falls at the Lake has several options with Church Landing being supreme (think 5 stars).  Church Landing is named so because an actual church stood on that location which has been incorporated into the facility.

Once in our suite, we were greeted by absolute comfort. From the super thick bed with a mountain of pillows, to the sitting room with fireplace, couches, and a work table with a phone which came in handy because the next morning, Jeff had a fall foliage interview with a radio station in the Merrimack Valley.

Luxury Lodge Style

The rooms are well-appointed in a luxury lodge style, many with water views.  Our room had a small balcony, and sitting there having coffee the next morning was a treat. The air was crisp but not cold and very enjoyable.

We have also stayed at the Inn at Mill Falls (Down the street).  The pricing is lower but you are still just across the street from the lake. And by no means does a lower price mean lower quality.  Everything at Mill Falls is also superb.

While staying there, we have eaten at the Lakehouse (a part of Church Landing, with friends and the food is fantastic with a fireplace to warm you after a chilly day exploring. There is also great lake-themed ephemera to enjoy.

Jeff’s Take

I got checked in on the 14th and met with the manager who showed me to the room. Once there, I was floored by the luxury/quality of the suite (definitely a 5-star hotel in my book) and while the rooms are at the upper end, you get what you pay for, luxury is everywhere you look while staying at Church Landing.

I spent the rest of the day shooting around the place and for photographers, there is not a single corner that is not photogenic. 

Outside I caught the sun on the maples and birch around the edge of Lake Winnipesaukee. I loved the Adirondack chairs that were still out for hotel guests who wanted to catch the afternoon sun and the fall colors.

The Picture at the top of the article is one I took on the 14th and it was so nice that they bought it by comping another room on a later date (although, it was not a suite like this one) 🙁

Things to do in this area

We explored our way home by visiting the Castle in the Clouds which is maybe 20 minutes away. You can read about Castle in the Clouds here.

You can also visit the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad which can be found at 154 Main St, in Meredith as you are coming into town. The Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad is also a part of the Hobo Railroad which is based in Lincoln New Hampshire and you can find out about their Foliage trains here on their website.

Also for a meal, you can find many places in Meredith or for something special, head back onto Route 3, just outside Meredith and you will find Hart’s Turkey Farm. Hart’s is well known for its hot or cold turkey sandwiches. Don’t like turkey? Well, they have a full menu of comfort food to choose from at a reasonable price.
