C4SC or Color 4 the Sake of Color
I created this acronym, Color 4 the Sake of Color (C4SC) many years ago because my wife Lisa would constantly ask me, WHY did you take that picture? I had merely taken a picture similar to this very red maple (below). Why… DID… I take it?
Nope, it’s not a prize winner, No one is going to buy it and hang it on their wall (If you do want to let me know 🙂 ) So why would I waste the space on my computer hard drive or my phone? For you or me there is something amazing about these bright autumn colors that causes us to go bonkers in search of more fall colors… (admit it, you know you do)…
First off, there is nothing wrong with recording the colors, just for the sake of seeing them. C4SC is something we can all do each October and enjoy the rest of the year. So snap away my friends and enjoy!
Why, do we chase the peak fall colors?

I was first asked this when I was Blogging for Yankee Magazine (2006-2010) and my editor would also ask this question among several others. Let me ask you, why do you do it? Why do you chase the fall colors in New England, or anywhere else? leave a note in the comments below.
I can’t speak for why all of you chase the fall colors. Over the years I have finally put an answer to this question as far as my own personal motivation. For me, it’s all about the chase and finding, the peak fall colors. As I said during an interview on CBS Sunday morning, (You can watch it here) It’s like Christmas for me, finding all these gifts of peak color.
Beyond finding the gift, of the fall colors, it’s really much more. I first started down this path as Yankee’s first fall foliage blogger. My job was to tell people where I was finding the fall colors. Then I started out on my own to blog about when and where I was finding the fall colors. This “path of discovery” helps thousands of people every year and I enjoy helping people.
I’m also an artist who sells his work and each year, I travel many hundreds of miles each week in October, to get the right lighting in the right locations. In each article on my blog I try to share this with all of you.
Scenic Landscapes to Lobster Rolls, AKA, Plan Bs
You may be coming to New England for the thrill of the chase, or just to experience a beautiful autumn day in New England. The truth is New England is not that big and in a single day You can do so much. I realize many of you do come here for C4SC but as much as I love the chase, it does get tiring, especially if you are not finding it.
I always tell people to have plan “B’s”, Let’s say you pick your location and the colors are late and you are on Maine’s coast. A plan B might be as an example, heading out at pre-dawn to see the sunrise from the top of Cadillac Mountain. Then head down the coast to get a lobster roll lunch at Reds in Wiscasset Maine. You close out the afternoon with a Whale Watching trip out past Portland Head Lighthouse.
Any one of these makes great Plan Bs and I’m sure you could find many more Plan Bs if you look for them. Plan B’s are great because if the fall colors are not a part of the equation then you could do these things at almost any time of the year. You could enjoy a late spring day and have a lobster roll, visit a National historical site, or any of a thousand things in New England.
It’s only if we want to see the fall colors that we are limited in scope and time to visit.

This is one of those questions that only you can answer. Whether you come to see our scenic mountains, farmland, or seashore, I know you will find whatever you are looking for.

I can understand why you took that picture…The red color really stands out but when you are taking pictures of any fall foliage it is a good picture.
My wife and I did travel to New England both in August and October in 2019..August is our anniversary and we did enjoy visiting the region during that time of year plus we had to make a stop at Claws in Rockland Maine for some lobster……..

You don’t find reds like that too often and as it happens, its usually not near something photogenic like a covered bridge… This one was next to a Burger King… But for me, that doesn’t matter. It’s still beautiful. What is funny is that these trees have not put on a show like this since this shot… They turn but not to this degree…

For the sake of colors is good reason enough to take a picture. The second photo is very pretty, makes me want to go there.
